Oxford University Email With Gmail

10/12/2014

Comments

Oxford University's default mail client is Outlook, but I wanted to work through Gmail. On the web I was surprised to find only outdated instructions for linking with Gmail, and they didn't work. The trick is that you have to wait to link your accounts until about 30 minutes after you activate your Oxford account. In other words, don't be an eager beaver. Then:
Gmail -> "Settings" (the gear symbol in upper right) > "Accounts and Imports" > “Add another email address you own” (under "Send mail as") > For the SMTP servers, enter:

Server name: smtp.ox.ac.uk
Port: 587
User name: your Nexus account name (e.g., oucs1234)
Security setting: TLS
The verification email from Gmail will most certainly go to your Spam folder, so check that afterwards. Once you click the link in that email you're all set!

AFTER CHANGING YOUR UNIVERSITY PASSWORD (AS YOU'RE REQUIRED TO DO EVERY YEAR), YOU'LL NEED TO RE-DO THIS, OR ELSE YOUR EMAILS WON'T SEND :(
